Which GSM Towel Do You need?

Talking about car drying towels, a common question is Which GSM microfiber towel is ideal for each detailing process? To begin to answer that question let’s explain what GSM is. GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter (g/m2).  The higher the GSM, thicker and more absorbent the microfiber towel. The higher pile creates less surface pressure when wiping, often ideal for drying. Contrastingly, lower GSM towels have a lower pile which is more aggressive when scrubbing, ideal for interiors, polish removal, etc.

Let’s go through common car drying towels by process and their ideal GSM use:

Microfiber Towels

<300 GSM

Depending on the quality, less than 300GSM may not be ideal for use on paint as they could be deemed too aggressive. However, MaxShine’s construction allow these types of towels to be used anywhere.  This GSM range works well on interiors and those areas that get extra dirty such as door jams and engines.

Microfiber Towels

200-400 GSM
Glass Specific

Lower pile is generally ideal for glass as it minimizes streaking, though there are higher pile styles with a specific waffle weave design that provide greater absorption with streak-free results.

300-400 GSM

This GSM range of microfiber towels are the most versatile in detailing processes. They work well for all interior surfaces, are efficient for polish and wax removal, and level coatings with precision.

+500 GSM

As mentioned before, the higher the GSM, the higher the absorbency and reduced friction, so 500GSM and above are the most ideal car drying towels.

Other Option

There are those out there who prefer a higher pile for wax removal than the suggested 300-400GSM. So within this higher pile category are towels that are perfect for coating buffing and wax removal; 500-600GSM. Not everyone does a 2-step coating wipe of leveling followed by buffing, but for those who do this range of GSM is the way to go.
